Menna Elfyn

[United Kingdom] 1951–

Menna Elfyn was born in 1951 and lives in Llandysul, west Wales. She has published eight collections of poetry as well as novels and plays. In recent years, the English publisher, Bloodaxe, has issued bilingual volumes from Menna Elfyn, which contain facing-text English language translations by a variety of hands. These volumes include Cell Angel / Cell Angel, (1996) and Cusan Dyn Dall / Blind Man’s Kiss (2001).

In 2005 the Welsh publisher, Gomer, brought out her new Welsh language poems, Perffaith Nam. This volume, in English, translation by Elin ap Hywel, will be published by Bloodaxe.

Critic Tony Conran has described Menna Elfyn as “the first Welsh poet in fifteen hundred years to make a serious attempt to have her work known outside Wales”.
